Situated in Floyd County, Indiana, New Albany is a city that lies alongside the Ohio River opposite the city of Louisville in the State of Kentucky.  With an estimated population of more than 36,500 residents, it’s considered part of the Louisville metropolitan area. New Albany is recognized as the county seat of Floyd County.

The United States was officially granted the land for New Albany after the Revolutionary War. The area came into the possession of Col. John Paul when George Rogers Clark - who captured the territory - sold his some of his land to fellow soldiers.  Founded in 1813, the site was named after Albany, New York by three brothers Nathaniel, Joel and Abner Scribner.

In 1817, New Albany was officially incorporated as a town, and two years later, it become Floyd County’s seat of government. From 1816 to 1860, New Albany was Indiana’s largest city and experienced rapid growth. During the mid-19th century, the engine of the city’s economy was primarily the steamboat industry, however, by the early 20th century, it became a centre for veneer and plywood.

As of today, low crime rates, late 1800s architecture and progressive schools.  For entertainment, residents visit Paul Ogle Cultural and Community Centre, Great Escape Theater, and of course, New Albany Riverfront Amphitheater, which accommodates up to 10,000 people and is the centre of the action on the city’s riverfront.

There are also many historic sites that hold great importance, such as Carnegie Center for Art & History, Scribner House, Culbertson Mansion State Memorial and Town Clock Church. In addition to having a wide variety of local restaurants, the city also hosts several festivals and events throughout the year, including the Harvest Homecoming Festival and New Albany Historic Homes Tour’.

For recreation, New Albany boasts 17 different park areas. Education in the city is managed by the New Albany-Floyd County Consolidated School Corporation, which encompasses two high schools, three middle schools and nine elementary schools.  Indiana State University is also located in the city of New Albany.

The city receives 46 inches of rain and 6 inches of snowfall per year. With the average high around 88 degrees in the summers, it’s crucial to have a well-functioning air conditioning system in place to lower the temperature in your home.
